After six months at Fort Fork, Alexander Mackenzie began his epic journey to the,Pacific Ocean On the evening of May 9 1793 he canoed up the Peace in an uneventful manner until he readied the great canyon of the river on May 19  While making a difficult portage of a dozen miles around the can­yon, he found large deposits of bituminous coal, and one of his men discovered several chasms in the earth that emitted heat and smoke
