CDP Theme Day: Upside Down. Sort Of.

Okay, this is a stretch. Look, um, carefully at the center of the picture. A few of our colleagues have complained that this month's theme was tough. Had to scrounge up what I could from the Pridefest Parade photos that I'm editing.

July City Daily Photo Theme Day: Upside down

Anish Kapoor mirror Versailles palace
July and it's sizzling hot in Versailles! A heatwave is upon us, as is Theme Day in the City Daily Photo blogging community. These pictures were taken at the palace last Sunday, VDP was literally roasting but hey! Anish Kapoor's summer exhibit in the palace gardens provided the perfect upside down pictures! More to come about the exhibition in a few days, in the meantime, have a look at all the takes on the Theme by clicking here and enjoy July!

July 2015 Theme Day: Upside Down

Bitte nicht den Hals verrenken. Morgen gibt es die Auflösung. Heute nur ein Kopfüber-Bild.
Don't risk a whiplash. You'll see the solution tomorrow. Today it is simply an upside-down shot.

Upside down Down Under

.

UPSIDE DOWN is today's subject for City Daily Photo Theme Day.
My laundry was drying on the fence in the hot Australian sun back in 2005 when I lived an almost hermit life for a month in rural New South Wales as a volunteer for the Good Samaritan Donkey Sanctuary.
To read more about the good life there and to see some of the over 100 sweet donkeys, please go to my earlier posts,  "Preaching to the donkeys"  and  "Bless the donkeys."

Theme Day - Up-side-down - Tall ship, Enterprize (7)

Although an experienced scuba-diver, and an afficionado of marine archaeology, my friend, Diane, was hesitant about taking the one hour jaunt on "The Enterprize" on Port Phillip Bay, out of Portarlington. The weather was brewing, and this close to the heads, the waters have a treacherous reputation.

The decision made, we boarded and headed for the dead-centre of the deck to mitigate the bluster and swell as nuch as possible.I walk with a stick, and wobble precariously at times, so did not move around for the duration. I did, however, move from the vertical to the horizontal, ie, I lay down on the cabin roof, which afforded some remarkable views of the rigging.

This is my contribution to the City Daily Photo Monthly Theme Day. For further contributions to the July Theme of "Upside-Down" please visit the CDP Gallery.

Let's Ease Into This

Proud Eagle 1

I spent hours on Sunday shooting the Pride Parade, the most colorful photo op of the year in The Lou. The mood was exceptionally exuberant in light of last week's Supreme Court decision. There were some people who were really out there.

Easier to get into this gradually. Someone was standing on the sidelines holding the world's calmest raptor on one of those big leather gloves. Is there such a thing as a gay eagle?

By the way, note the bird's eyes in the second photo. Does anyone know if they have some kind of odd ocular membrane?

Getting Their Shot

“The Oslo Opera House is a very special place,” writes Wim Uyttenbroeck, who captured this picture in the Norwegian capital. “These three colorful photographers make a nice contrast against the white stone and plate glass of the building. The white clouds in the sky make the picture complete.”

Burning a candle during load shedding

As much as people are complaining about load shedding, we aren't allowing it to get us down.  It does mean that we aren't always getting to do everything that we need to and one of those that's been neglected because of it has been my blogging.  I can't only blame Eishkom though.  It doesn't help that my laptop at home has a busted battery otherwise I could have spent a whole two hours at a time editing photos while everything else is out in the evenings.  Anyhow,  I though I'll post a quick picture and heaven behold, the only picture that I have uploaded was this candle.  Need to upload a few more tonight and hoping that the lights will stay on.  Enjoy the candle in the meantime *wink*

Art in ruins

.

Let's peek in and see what's behind that enticing sign that warns "Caution, abandoned and shut up building."

Lots of buildings in the older neighborhoods of Tel Aviv are now roofless and have their windows blocked up.

Ah, but the mural artist Dede (whose two-headed animals we saw in last week's post)
has given life to the crumbling wall!

The walls have ears (as the old saying goes), but now they have eyes too.

Pride

Happy Americans at London Pride celebrate the recent legalisation of gay marriage in the US.  A big red bus full of Americans representing the US Embassy here in London took part in the days celebrations.

Creepy Or Enigmatic

Creepy Basement Players

A few more shots from The Fringe. The Creepy Basement Players, above, are a brilliant local improv group. They were kind enough to let me photograph them after last year's Fringe performance.

Below, a scene from The Mind Shaft, one of three short plays called Existentially Speaking  written by local author Patricia Duffin (who, I just found out when I looked at her Facebook page, works for an old friend of mine). Two workers descend on an elevator deep into the earth, not quite sure what they are looking for or why they are looking for it.

Bottom, one of the several sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle you can find around STL.

I spent hours shooting at the Pride Parade yesterday. If all goes according to plan, I'll spend most of Friday on the island where I was born. Overwhelming amounts of material.

Violent storms around the area as I write this Sunday night. Tornado warnings come and go. There are reports of hail with 1 inch/25 mm or more diameter just to the north of my home. So hi from summer in the Midwest.

Wish me luck here! I have absolutely no expertise here whatsoever, so please, call me out with anything where you reckon you have a fact to counter my random guess!

Le banc du jardin des étangs Gobert

Bench banc jardin étangs Gobert Versailles
Once you have reached the top of yesterday's stairs, you arrive at a rather nice space which is occupied, in part, by this huge and very controversial 90 metres long (295ft) bench! The garden has materialised on what were once huge ponds, which used to provide water for the palace's fountains.

Area Of The Peace River Canyon Emitting Heat and Smoke To This Day

After six months at Fort Fork, Alexander Mackenzie began his epic journey to the,Pacific Ocean On the evening of May 9 1793 he canoed up the Peace in an uneventful manner until he readied the great canyon of the river on May 19  While making a difficult portage of a dozen miles around the canyon, he found large deposits of bituminous coal, and one of his men discovered several chasms in the earth that emitted heat and smoke

Handsome Solid Boy Until The Termites Got Him

Trumpeldor Cemetery by night

.

My kind relative who hosted me for the weekend, her apartment overlooks Tel Aviv's historic Trumpeldor Cemetery.
It makes for a pretty quiet neighborhood, except for the frequent jets that come in over the Mediterranean (a block away) and fly over exactly overhead, some with landing gear already down, en route to Ben Gurion Airport.

Only a few plots remain and will go to top VIPs.
Since its founding in 1902, some 5,000 people have been buried there.
Tel Aviv was founded only later, in 1909.

You can see daytime shots of the cemetery and read more about it in my earlier posts:
"So many life stories in a small place"
and
"Find a grave via SMS"

St. Louis Fringe: Didgeridoo In The Dark

Digeridoo In The Dark 1

The St. Louis Fringe was on last weekend and this. What with my whirlwind life and pseudo blogging break, I was only able to go yesterday. Caught five performances.

This is Michael Hagmeier, a virtuoso of the didgeridoo. His performance was called Didgeridoo In The Dark and that's just what it was, a forty-five minute improvisation in a black box theater with the lights out. I imagined my self sitting at the foot of Uluru on a moonless night, absorbed in dreamtime.

Digeridoo In The Dark 2

Peak of Dawn

Shirley poppies bloom in a field near Japan’s Mount Tsukuba, here silhouetted against an early morning sky. The mountain—which can be ascended via a hiking trail or cable car—has two peaks, each rising more than 2,800 feet.

Tall ship, Enterprize (5)

Of course, not all tall ship lovers, are lovers of the pitch and roll of onboard life. Some are landlubbers.

The organgrinder was probably more interested in the music, but was on hand to provide colour and atmosphere. The large fella, well he concentrated on these pinthings, once we were safely tied up once again. Any idea what the pins are for?
