Central Railway Station (3)

I really like the concourse of our main Sydney terminal. However, I also like the clock-tower. It has such a prominent position.

The station was in operation from August 1906, even though the main building was nowhere near complete. The clock-tower was not completed until 1921. I suspect cost was a factor. And a little thing kmown as World War I. The final image, from the Powerhouse Museum Collection, shows the main building about December 1906. Hard to believe that the clock-tower stands upon the same ground as Carters Barracks, where my great-great-grandfather, William Chapman, was incarcerated in 1839, after spending a couple of months in the hulk Phoenix moored off Lavender Bay.
