The Nightingale Legacy

This is the Nightingale Wing of the Sydney Hospital, on Macquarie Street. It was built in 1869 - to Florence's plans - to house the first nursing school in Sydney, which was staffed directly from London.

Sydney Hospital itself, (the Nightingal Wing is on the same site), was constructed on this site in 1811, and was originally known as The Rum Hospital, as that was the currency in which the entrepreneurial builders were paid. It was a shoddy job, which took until the 1980s to fully rectify. The Nightingale Wing now houses the Sydney Sexual Health Centre.
