In Your Dreams

I bet you'd prefer that this one left you in peace. It is a Nepalese Hindu demon, a mask that was on sale at a fundraiser for the Mitrata Nepal Foundation last weekend. You have  probably noticed the logo and link at the bottom of the right sidebar. We have supported a young woman in Kathmandu for 8 or 9 years. Now she has finished high school and is about to take the entrance exam for college. She is posing here with Mrs. C.  

The other pictures are of Nepalese batik fabric and rolled Buddhist prayer flag.

The Hop Exchange

Proof of the importance of beer.  The Hop exchange building was built in 1867, originally with a glass roof to enable the trading of hops to be conducted under natural light.  Southwark was for a very long time the area known for hops, breweries and coaching inns. The hops were grown in nearby Kent and right up until the 1960's locals, often entire families, would take a working holiday each Autumn picking the bines.

Most of the warehouses and other buildings in the area were destroyed during the second world war, the hop exchange was the grandest building in Southwark to survive.  Although not entirely in its original form.  Unfortunately due to a fire in 1920 the top two floors were removed and the remainder of the building was converted into offices.

You could even say it glows. New and old ways to present books. Love the decorated ceiling beams. More of an old European look.

Our Central Library is a lovely building and I am glad for what it does for the community. I must confess, however, that I do almost exclusively Kindle books these days. How else could you carry your own library on, literally, a small tablet that weighs a couple of hundred grams?                

Jane's Walk tours in Beer Sheva

Four tall buildings are going up on a small, formerly quiet residential street in Beer Sheva's Gimel Neighborhood.
And the neighbors, the old-timers, are not happy about it.

This afternoon the worldwide Jane's Walk citizen-guided walking tours began in Beer Sheva.
