La maison Fabre

VDP had another contender for yesterday's Theme Day. It is la maison Fabre, glove maker since 1924. The Versailles branch is located in the Scents Courtyard. There's double luxury and style here, as the first picture is taken out of the window looking towards the gorgeous Guerlain shop!

VDP avait un autre lieu en réserve pour le thème d'hier. Il s'agit de la maison Fabre, gantier depuis 1924 et dont la boutique versaillaise se trouve dans la cour des senteurs. Doublement luxueux et élégant, puisque la première photo a été prise par la fenêtre et on y voit la superbe boutique Guerlain !

Going out in style

This elegant carved and painted wood carriage was made in Szarvas, Hungary, in the 19th century.
Would you believe, it was used for funerals!
I'd call that going out in style.

The sign next to it at the Israel Museum says this about the Chevra Kadisha (Jewish burial society) carriage:

Accompanying the dead on their final journey towards burial is part of the tradition of honoring the deceased and is already mentioned in Rabbinic literature as one of the essential deeds "for which one is rewarded in one's lifetime and also earns a reward in the world to come."
Funeral processions were held with due ceremony and the deceased was carried in a special vehicle, such as this majestic carriage from Hungary.

Our own secluded Baviaans valley

One of the best parts of exploring while traveling is discovering hidden gems.  Some of these hides are figuratively, as in somewhere (either a place or establishment) off the beaten track that the hordes haven't discovered yet.  Sometimes you find places that are literally hidden though.  One of these I found on our weekend at Baviaans Lodge recently.  A walk along a stream up one of the valleys near the lodge brought us to a breathtaking spot with a river pool, sheer cliffs on both sides and a small waterfall cascade.  This is my kind of place.  Somewhere to go and plug in your soul for some recharging.  Do click through and read the whole post as Baviaans Lodge is the ideal recharging spot even if you don't walk up that valley. 

Gardens and Cars

How did I spot this car on a garden visit?  You might well ask! Well, it was part of national gardens open for charity weekend, and I'd agreed to meet friends to look at some local private gardens.  But it was raining and grey.  Wimpy me tried to find an excuse not to go.  However, that's the wonderful thing about my friends, they don't let me get away with poor excuses.  So off I went, somewhat reluctantly, to traipse through muddy gardens.

Later on I will show you pictures of some of the wonderful gardens owned by the most friendly and accommodating people who let us enter their houses, even with muddy boots on, to enable us to see their stunning gardens.

However, as today is theme day for the CDP comment, and we are all to post a photo that meets the theme of "stylish"  I have chosen to show you the 1955 Studebaker 2 door coupe that was parked out front of one of the gardens we visited.  Ooohhhh it is a gorgeous lime green and vibrant yellow colour, and all shiny, whats not to like about this car.  Soooo stylish!!
